Yet another master piece from the maestro, vishal bharadwaj. A drama beautifully interlaced with action, can be churned out only with outstanding script and screenplay. He roped in just the right cast and am not able to think of anyone who can replace Shahid and Priyanka. They simply lived the characters.
Shahid plays these identical twins (Charlie and Guddu) who are extremely contrasting in their identities with similarities being looks and a minor speech impairment…which too is discerned very well to mark a difference. If Charlie is the rough-n-tough guy, who lisps and aspires to succeed in life through shortcuts, Guddu stammers and is the other side of the coin. Shahid has thoroughly justified both the roles and nobody else could have done any better. For a change, Shahid can be acclaimed for his performance and not Dance.
Priyanka plays Sweety, a Maharastrian gal and is very convincing with her Marathi accent and the body language. Did you know that she even hired a diction coach to ensure accurate pronunciation? Now that’s called as Homework!
Gist of the movie: Sweety is in love with Guddu and happens to be the sister of a to-be-MP kinda goon. Charlie forcefully involves himself in a drug scam and tries to exploit the situation. When the goon trades off with Guddu about his sister and demands the drugs (that Charlie manages to own) in return, both the brothers meet. What happens next is the rest of the story.
More than the story, the narration made an impact and is captivating. I can say it’s the same old drama but is presented in a new package that aptly fits the bill of today’s Janta.
If few scenes touch our heart, few tickle us and few put our brains at work. Just to recall few gems,
- When the brothers converse after the fight for the box of drugs
- When Sweet convinces Guddu for wedding
- When Guddu is interrogated and made to sing to convey the information
- When Charlie’s best friend mocks a gun fight with the goon
- The confluence of all the gangs and their division of share.
- When Charlie dumps the drug packets into flames when he sees the dead body of his best friend.
Few scenes just speak for themselves and is left to our discretion to draw a conclusion.
Talking about music, Dhan te Nan is the new-hummer on every lips and the rest are well picturized situational songs. Just a tid-bit about Dhan te nan – this song is the remixed version and the original found its roots 10 years ago in some documentary starring Sharman Joshi. Though Vishal had given birth to this track long ago, it took the right beat to top the charts!
All in all, this is an entertainer and a definite paisa vasool!
